11 Geeky Aspirations for 2013!

Happy 2013 guys! Here's to a geeky year for all of us!
Hello and welcome to the first blog post of 2013! I hope you all had a great Christmas and awesome New Year’s celebrations! As the end of 2012 has been rolling around, I’ve been thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. Everyone makes them. Some people keep them, some people don’t. As well as having some personal ones, I also have quite a few based around  what I want to do with my blog, as well as being geekier than ever in 2013!

1.) Contribute more on My Heart Lies In Film and Comics, Comics Crux, Media Junk Food and Geeky Femmes!

Ideally, I’d like to be able to update MHLIFAC daily, but what with my university timetables, wavering social life and various hobbies, sometimes I can’t always do this. However, I plan on updating as regularly as possible! As for Comics Crux, I only recently started writing for them, and due to the craziness of the festive season, I haven’t had chance to write for them as much as I’d like. Also, I want to contribute even more to Media Junk Food, in particular the Break Time segment. any chance I get to share what I'm reading with more people is welcomed!  Finally, Geeky Femmes is the feminist-and-geekery focussed blog that my friend Gina and I are starting in the new year. We’ve written an introductory post, but I have a lot of things planned for the new year!

2.) Go to more conventions.

After going to a variety of small, big, and frankly overwhelming conventions, festivals and meet ups last year, I’m hooked. I want to go to as many more conventions as I can this year! I’m already planning on going to Lincoln Steampunk Asylum and Thought Bubble Leeds again, and I’ll be going to the second Lucky-Con (a small, local anime/manga convention) as a seller with Gina. Gina and I also plan on going to Hyper Japan, and I’d like to go to MCM Birmingham. I guess I’ll see where the new year takes me!

3.) Do more cosplays!
My Ramona Flowers cosplay mood board!

After spending half of last year’s conventions dressed in either Lolita fashion, dressed as Jade from Morning Glories, or corseted up at Lincoln Steampunk Asylum, I realised how fun it was to cosplay! As you might have seen me mention in my other blog posts (or on Twitter!) I plan on cosplaying a lot more this year. I’m working (albeit slowly) on a Ramona Flowers outfit, and I really want to cosplay as Layla Miller at some point!

4.) Speak to more indie comics creators.

I recently started speaking to comics creators and giving them spotlights here on my blog, and the more I do it, the more I enjoy it. As much as I like comics from Marvel and Image (not a DC girl, sorry!) the small, indie comics are just as good, sometimes better. I’ve come across some amazing webcomics and actual comics in the last year, and I hope to find more, and give them the spotlight they deserve!

5.) Go to more comics fairs!

Since I moved into a big new city, I’ve been able to do many things: go to a comic shop regularly, live with my crazy friends, and get lost in a new place. However, it turns out that there’s been regular comics fairs here and I’ve been missing them! Not only would they be a great opportunity for me to fill up some gaps in my back issues, and related to my last resolution, it’ll hopefully give me the chance to talk to more indie creators!

6.) Cover more things on my blogging platforms.

Despite the fact I write for (and will be writing for) quite a few sites, I don’t think I cover enough stuff. So I’m gonna try and write about more things- game reviews, conventions, DnD, and everything in between!
"Adventure Time, come on grab your
friends..."

7.) Learn to play the Adventure Time theme tune on guitar.

I’ve been playing guitar on and off for about two and half years now, and despite not practising as much as I should do,  I more or less have the basics down! So combining my minor musical skill with one of my favourite TV programmes would be pretty cool! If I do manage to learn it, I’ll definitely post a video blog of me playing it.

8.) Give my blog a makeover!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I want to snazz my blog up a bit. I want to make it more organised, maybe get a different background, and see if I can make it look a little bit more professional… As well as including as much purple as I possibly can! I’ll likely be enlisting the help of my tech-ninja housemate Daryl to help me out, so consider this fair warning!

9.) Create a Facebook page and be active.

I’ve been debating this for a while, but I think it’s high time I made a Facebook fan page. This way I can speak to you guys a lot easier (the 140 character limit can be a bit of a pain on Twitter!) and discuss what other things to cover, as well as talking more with other pages and people.

10.) Vlog more!

I did my first video blog a few weeks ago, and it was great fun! Once you get over the initial shock that you’re just talking to an inanimate camera, it’s actually quite easy! Since my first vlog went down pretty well, I’ll be hopefully doing one every month, and I’ll be answering questions, talking about what I’ve been up to, and I’ll see if I can get my friends to guest star in them, or whatever else I can think of! If you have any ideas for what I should talk about or if you have any questions you want me to answer, leave them in a comment or tweet me!
My signed copy #1 Morning Glories. It's my
pride and joy!

11.) Collect all back issues of Morning Glories.

I love the Morning Glories comic series. I’ve spread the love for it all throughout my house, and everyone knows not to bother me when I’m reading the newest issue. When I was at Thought Bubble Leeds back in November, I not only had the pleasure of meeting Nick Spencer, author behind MG, but I was also lucky enough to pick up quite a few back issues for pretty reasonable prices. I now have roughly half of the back issues (I’m working on getting all the variant covers!) and I hope on getting the rest of them!

That’s my geeky aspirations for the coming year, what are some of yours?

Thanks for reading!

  1. I'm with you on #2. I honestly haven't really gone to any conventions. I'm thinking about going all out and planning a trip to San Diego Comic-Con. If not that then definitely New York Comic-Con. I gotta get my hands on some of these limited edition action figures they have at these things!

And you should definitely continue video blogging. That was a fun post!

    1. I'm really hoping to get to SDCC or NYCC at some point in the next couple of years! Oh gosh, yeah, some of the limited edition stuff they sell at them would be well worth the entry price- I saw an amazing NYCC-exclusive variant cover to Bedlam #1 that I'd love to have!

It was fun to do a vlog, so I'm gonna do them more often!
