have been able to see the light of day through the crowd-funding site, and many more are waiting on the sidelines for their time under the limelight. As independent comics creators know, getting your stuff out there and published into the big ol’ world often proves difficult, but with Kickstarter and social media, it’s proving easier and easier to get good work out there. Many indie works I’ve read could easily hold their own against the Big Two, and sometimes, are even better.
5th Dimension Comics is one such project. I may be somewhat biased here (as 5D is the home of my webcomic Beasts of Baxley- if you haven’t checked it out yet, please do!) but I still have complete, unwavering faith in 5th Dimension Comics’ newest project. The Wisdom of Fools is an 84-page horror anthology, with a variety of pin-ups, comics and prose, all of which is of the utmost quality. With a fantastic selection of five writers and nine artists coming together to create the horror-fest, the project looks set to land at the end of the year if it gets fully funded. Over on the Kickstarter page, an exclusive upload of the first six pages of comic The Magician (written by David M Brown, art by D.N.S., which I reviwed a few weeks ago here) has been added by head honcho David M Brown, giving potential pledgers a promising taste of things to come.
I recently interviewed David about the Kickstarter project:
Hello David! Could you tell me more about your project?
Hi Ari! The project is a graphic novel horror anthology called ‘The Wisdom of Fools’. It features five writers and nine artists. It’s been crazy putting these nightmares down on paper and watching them take shape! We have 84 pages complete at the moment but we may be able to add a few more. We’ve tried to absolutely pack it full of material and make it worth every cent.
What is your favourite part of the anthology?
Favourite part…hmmm…that’s truly a tough question. All of it is really cool and I’m proud as hell of how it came out! I can’t pick just one part because that’s like choosing your favourite child…not cool! I suppose based on the fact that it was the first tale we did at Fifth Dimension Comics, ‘The Magician’ would get the honours!
What do you plan to do next with 5th Dimension Comics?
Glad you asked, we’ve got projects lined up I’m really excited about! First, ‘Beasts of Baxley’ and ‘Punk ‘n Hood’ will continue as our main two web comics. Secondly, ‘The Magician’ is being turned into an on-going series with me on words and D.N.S. on art. We also have a few secret projects lined up with artists Dennis Coyle lll and Jeremy Mathes but we can’t really get into the details of those just yet.
Where do you hope to take 5th Dimension Comics in the future?
I hope we can keep growing our team. I’ve been really fortunate in gathering extremely talented people to the cause. I’d like 5d to grow into an umbrella for the best indie comic talent to work under. Bringing creators together has been very rewarding and to keep doing that would be my future hopes and dreams for 5d Comcis.
What has your experience with crowd-funding been like so far?
Oh man! So crazy! I’d always read that it’s a lot of work and they weren’t lying! I’d worked on it for months before the launch and I’ve continue to do so every day since the launch. Although it is a ton of work, it’s really rewarding when you start to see backers getting behind you! So far, the response has been greater than I anticipated and I’m very thankful to all the backers who’ve supported us so far!
What have you learned from your experience?
I’ve learned that being in charge of an independent comics company and running a Kickstarter is a full time job! And on top of 3 kids and another full time job, it’s insanely difficult. But I’ve also learned how much I love doing it!
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Prepare EVERYTHING in advance! Leave nothing to complete because there is simply no time.
As a big horror fan, I love your genre choice. What made you decide to focus entirely on horror?
Well, I’ve always been into the darker side of storytelling…I just find it more interesting. Also being an anthology, I thought it would be fun to see so many different takes on the subject. We ended up with a great line up of stories that will keep you up at night.
What’s it been like working with so many different talented creators?
It’s been the most rewarding part of this whole experience. Being able to collaborate with this level of talent has been nothing short of inspirational! It also made me up my own game to keep up with these guys and girls! I’ve also got to know the whole group and consider them friends as well as collaborators.
What are you working on now?
I’m prepping ‘The Magician’ on-going series at the moment. Punk ‘n Hood is always on my mind as well! But mostly, I’m focusing on the Kickstarter campaign.
Describe The Wisdom of Fools in three words!
Nightmare. Nasty. Death.
What do you hope to bring to the comics world?
An unfiltered, pure stream of ideas and comics to keep the form fresh and vibrant. I feel the big 2 have gone a little stale.
What are the benefits of creating independently?
No boss! No censorship! No bullshit!
What are the disadvantages of creating independently?
It’s all on me at the end of the day and self-publishing is expensive!
